#FriendsTravel Los Cabos Weddings and Honeymoons

From a beautiful oceanfront ceremony overlooking the Arch to a sophisticated soiree on the terrace of a luxury resort, Los Cabos offers a plethora of stunning locations to exchange vows. As one of the most popular locations for destination weddings in Mexico, Los Cabos can cater to any couple’s unique tastes and personalities. With a long list of award-wining hotels, no shortage of professional services or wedding planners ready to accommodate any budget or group size and a dramatic backdrop, brides and grooms can rest assured that no detail will be overlooked at Land’s End.

The following is a list of Frequently Asked Questions to assist those considering Los Cabos as their wedding destination:

What kind of paperwork do I need to get married in Los Cabos?

The required paperwork for a marriage Los Cabos is similar to that required in the U.S., with the difference being that the nearest Mexican consulate must validate all documents (your hotel or wedding coordinator can assist with this process).

The basic requirements are as follows:

  • Current passport as proof of ID and marital status.
  • Certified copy of both party’s birth certificates.
  • Tourist card (received upon arrival in Mexico) or visa.
  • Names, addresses, nationalities, occupations and ages of both parents.
  • Health certificate and blood test (hotels will help set up the tests, which must be done in Mexico).
  • Four witnesses (these can be provided by a wedding planner or the hotel locally for an extra fee). Will also need to provide their names, addresses, occupations, ages and photo ID.

Typically, two to four days must be spent in Cabo San Lucas to complete the requirements, although less time may be required when a wedding coordinator is involved.

In addition, previously married couples need verification that a minimum of one full year has elapsed from the date of one of the following:

  • Divorce: Final dissolution of marriage must be verified with a certified copy of the final divorce decree.
  • Widowed: Must be verified with a certified copy of the spouse’s death certificate.

What kind of ceremony can I have in Los Cabos? Civil, religious or both?

There are two forms of weddings performed in Mexico. One is the Civil Wedding (Matrimonio Civil).  This ceremony changes your marital status from single to married.  Your proof of marriage is recognized as legal throughout the world.  A Spanish-speaking Judge performs the civil ceremony; a wedding planner may be in attendance to translate for you. This is comparable to a ceremony performed by the Justice of the Peace in the United States or Canada.  The Judge’s vows are set and cannot be altered.

For the civil ceremony the following is mandatory:

Copy of your birth certificate

  • Lab work completed in the state in which you are getting married
  • Copy of your Tourist Visas (you receive these on the plane)
  • Divorce decree if applicable.  It is necessary to be divorced one year in order to get married in Mexico.

There are no exceptions to the above for a wedding that is legal throughout the world.

The civil ceremony can be performed in the judge’s chambers Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM or for an additional fee, the civil ceremony can be performed outside the judge’s chambers at a location of your choice.

The other ceremony is the religious/non-denomination ceremony.  This ceremony does not change your marital status in Mexico or anywhere in the world.  If you want to perform the civil ceremony at your home either before or after your Cabo San Lucas wedding you can, or you can do both the civil ceremony and the religious/non-denominational wedding in Los Cabos. For a non-denominational minister ceremony, you can choose your wedding vows from some of the Minister’s favorites. Vows may also be altered to include scripture passages of your choice or special poems, songs, etc. If you need ideas or help with any of the words you want to say to each other, your minister will gladly assist you.

It is possible to have both the civil and non-denominational ceremony completing the legalities in the Judge’s chambers and having the minister for your sunset wedding at a location of your choice.\

A honeymoon registry is a service, typically on the Internet, that assists engaged and married couples in financing their honeymoons.

Honeymoon registries began in the 1980’s as an additional service provided by Friends Travel, LLP. Some are still set up in this manner and require the wedding couple to use our travel agency to book their honeymoon.

Friends Travel, LLP will  provide the couple with a customizable web page to share their honeymoon plans with others and accept gifts toward the honeymoon. As “non-traditional” registry options such as a honeymoon registry became more popular, Friends Travel, LLP added this option to complement their “traditional” fare in 1985.

The typical honeymoon registry service

Most honeymoon registries allow a couple to create and customize a registry web page with photos and details of their upcoming wedding and honeymoon. Wedding guests are invited to visit the registry site so they may contribute a monetary gift to cover a portion of the honeymoon or a specific activity as detailed by the couple.

For example, a couple may list dinner at an elegant restaurant, scuba diving lessons, or portions of hotel and airfare. These activities are displayed in an organized and user-friendly inventory format on their customized registry page. As wedding guests browse the registry page, they can make a gift, typically using a credit card, of any of the listed activities or give a general monetary gift of any amount towards the honeymoon.

Etiquette

As noted by The Wall Street Journal review of popular honeymoon registry services:

“A honeymoon is a perfectly appropriate gift to request,” says Peter Post, president of the Emily Post Institute, a Burlington, Vt., etiquette think tank. “There’s no objection to it from an etiquette point of view.”
